Aerosol emission and exposure from metal fabrication and machining

We constructed a metal fume chamber to study the fume generation from various metal fabrication processes. The conical steel-constructed metal fume chamber is equipped with a high volume flow pump (Gelman Instrument) on top, which can accommodate 90 mm filters to capture any fume. The chamber is designed according to American Welding Society F1.2:2013.
The metal fume chamber is always smiling during work, so do we.

The "eyes" of the chamber is made of the finest cowhide, while the "nose" is an observation window with auto darkening glass.

Its "hat" can draw flow up to 3500 Lpm and you can image the high pitch noise it made.



We are currently working on test the metal fumes from pulse welding as well as plasma cutting, under various operation settings. Stainless steel (ER308L) and mild steel (ER70-S2) are used in the experiments. A factorial design include electrical volts/currents, pulsing frequency and percentage, shielding gas composition and flow are used to structure the study. Mr. Tien Hoang (A NIOSH trainee) is the graduate research assistant working on this project.
